จงแสดงออกซึ่งความเป็นธรรมดาให้ปรากฏ

ในอดีตคนไทยส่วนใหญ่มีความเชื่อเรื่องของชาติหน้า แต่เขามีจิตเมตตากรุณา และไม่นิ่งดูดายเมื่อเห็นคนที่เดือดร้อน ซึ่งถือเป็นค่านิยมที่ส่งเสริมและถ่ายทอดกันมา แตกต่างจากปัจจุบัน แม้คนไทยจะมีความเชื่อเรื่องบุญ แต่มักจะทำบุญด้วยจิตที่เจือความโลภ คือ ไม่ได้หวังจะขึ้นสวรรค์เพียงอย่างเดียว แต่หวังอยากถูกหวย อยากมั่งมี อยากประสบความสำเร็จในชาตินี้เลย ซึ่งเป็นการทำเพื่อตัวเองแท้ๆ คือ การทำบุญด้วยจิตที่มีโลภะอยู่

พระพุทธเจ้าตรัสว่า ‘ทาน’ ที่มีอานิสงส์ไม่มาก ก็คือ ทานที่ให้ด้วยใจที่มีเยื่อใย หวังสั่งสมบุญ หรือหวังเสวยสุขในภพหน้า ถ้าผู้ที่ทำบุญยังมีจิตใจแบบนั้นอยู่ ก็จะไม่ได้อานิสงส์มากเท่าที่ควรจะเป็น แต่หากเราทำบุญ ไม่ว่าจะให้ทาน หรือช่วยเหลือใครก็ตาม เรามุ่งแต่ประโยชน์สุขของผู้รับ โดยไม่นึกถึงตัวเองว่าเราจะได้อะไร นั่นกลับเป็นบุญยิ่งกว่า นอกจากนี้ยังเป็นการขัดเกลา ลดละความเห็นแก่ตัว และลดละความยึดมั่นในตัวตนด้วย คนไทยควรทำบุญแบบนี้ให้มากขึ้น
